Spring is a time to dream.  Thoughts of balmy breezes and slow meanderings through a lush flower garden full of color means rounding up the gardening gear and plant catalogs to map out a plan to make those dreams come true. Since spring also marks the beginning of prime vintage and flea market shopping ahead with a season chock full of outdoor events, it only follows that any rational person would find a way to include some of these favorite found treasures in their planting plans to create the perfect flea market container garden!

Can we all just take a moment to fully admire this old floor lamp base turned flower stanchion? Who wouldn't love this salvaged treasure standing in a place of honor on a patio or next to the front door!!! Luckily, old floor lamps with interesting detail work are fairly easy to find and many will already have all of the electrical wiring removed.  Nestle a simple wire basket lined with moss for planting and you have a spectacular display!

Rusty bed springs as petitie pot holder!!! Bed springs are another item that can typically be found in abundance in flea market shopping situations. Be sure to visit multiple booths to find the size you want at the best price.  This would be a great way to use them inside as well as outside.  Display several of varying sizes on a tray, or use just one in a farmhouse style vignette. So cute!

This whimsical mop bucket planter is the brain child of Kelly from KellyElko.com.  Vintage rolling mop buckets may not be quite as easy to find, but you do see them now and then so be ready to scoop one up when you find it!  Adding the second level to the planter by inserting a smaller galvanized farm bucket balances out the bulkier base and allows for flowers to drape down into the planter below.  Be sure to visit Kelly to see the other flea market objects that she used for this outdoor space!

Who doesn't need a wall of bird cages to host all manner of planting vignettes? I am totally smitten!

Flea markets and vintage sales are a great place to find bird cages of all shapes and sizes! The prices can vary wildly so be prepared to shop multiple booths.  However, being a bird cage lover, I am definitely open to paying a bit more if I run onto one of a particularly unique shape or design. The condition of these pieces can also be drastically different.  To use them in the manner above, look for cages that are very structurally sound. Don't forget to check the cage floor to make sure it can support what you plan to put in it.  If you are planning to hang the cage, check that the hanging mount will be able to support your plantings.  Succulents are a great choice for using in bird cages because they do well in light weight planting medium.

Beach lover? Tuck small plantings into your favorite shells! Estate sales are a great source for large sized shells if you haven't collected any of your own.  What a great way to bring the feeling of sand and sea to your back porch or into the house!
